Donald Trump and Elon Musk are taking a wrecking ball to our government.

Their goal is to consolidate power in the hands of MAGA extremists, undermine the constitution, and enrich themselves.

Nothing they're doing benefits us.

Their attack on government agencies and the rule of law harms us by gutting consumer protections, eliminating vital services, and putting our health and national security at risk.

The GOP is cheering them on.

We're not going to stand for it.

Here’s how we win back democracy,
together

Stay informed
It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the flurry of Executive Orders, the barrage of news stories and analyses, and the continuous flood of repetitive and often inaccurate social media (including some well-meaning posts).

Verify what you read or see, there’s a lot of misinformation and intentional disinformation coming from both internal US sources and foreign intelligence agencies.

Follow these high quality journalists, historians, and commentators who provide more independent and nuanced analysis and perspective:
  • The Contrarian (Jennifer Rubin and Norman Eisen)
  • Democracy Docket (Marc Elias)
  • Letters from an America (Heather Cox Richardson)
  • Robert Reich
  • The Bulwark
  • NPR News
  • Pod Save the Youth (Youth perspective hosted by four Gen Z activists including West Newbury native David Seaton)
  • Wired (focused on the impact of technology, Wired has been doing outstanding reporting on DOGE since day one)
  • Just Security (analysis of security, democracy, foreign policy, and rights based at NYU School of Law)

National
Visit, call, write to your congressional delegation. Yes, even Democrats.  Let them know where you stand. If you want them to speak out or do more, tell them. If you support them, share that with them too. They need to hear from you.
  • Find your member of congress or call the switchboard at (202) 224-3121.
  • Visit 5calls.org to reach your reps and find guidance and talking points.
Focus on flipping federal or state offices Blue
  • Visit Indivisible RISE of Greater Newburyport for actions you can take today.
  • Register with Mobilize to search for things you can do locally or nationwide
  • Get involved in key special elections coming up soon, especially the Wisconsin Supreme Court race. Support Judge Susan Crawford for reelection there. A shift to the right could put two congressional seats at risk if GOP proposed gerrymandering is allowed to proceed. Search Mobilize for Wisconsin Supreme Court election activities.
  • Follow lawsuits (89 and counting) challenging Trump's administrative actions. Support organizations that are spearheading this vital work.
  • Vote with your feet, vote with your wallet. Watch Mobilize for information about protests, rallies, economic boycotts.
Local
  • Follow local government. Massachusetts is a progressive state but we are not immune to MAGA influences. Pay attention to candidates for local office. Do they represent your values?  Get involved!
  • Find your local Democratic committee. Attend a meeting, build your network, work for candidates you believe in! Sign up for news from the West Newbury Democrats

Combat cruelty and hatred with kindness

Trump and MAGA have made cruelty, anger, and divisiveness their brand
  • “We want the bureaucrats to be traumatically affected because they are increasingly viewed as villains. We want to put them in trauma.” (Director of the OMB Russell Vought)
  • "I’m coming to Boston. I’m bringing hell with me" (ICE Director Tom Homan)
  • "The irony about this for the scumbag commie libs, is that the cold civil war they're pushing for will end really badly for them" (FBI Assistant Director nominee Dan Bongino)

We can be better. Toughness isn't about demeaning others, it's about doing the hard work to lift everyone up and hold to your principles. Find local organizations who are making a difference in your community and support them. Commit acts of kindness. It's better for you and it's better for everyone. Here are some area groups to consider if you don't already have some in mind:
  • Our Neighbor's Table
  • (other local charities)
